More about me

I started learning keyboard and piano when I was about 7, taught by my Dad, and although I ended up getting very involved in brass bands, playing trombone, the piano is what I have kept returning to through my adult life.

It was about 11 years ago that I began to take it much more seriously. I had two very good teachers whilst I was living in the US, and then back in the UK I have been so fortunate to have been helped some fine teachers: firstly, Nami Kani who taught both privately and at the RNCM, and who helped me pass my grade 8 with distinction; and more recently with both Angela Brzezinka and Benny Hui who have been putting me through my paces as I prepare for my first diploma exam.

I have successfully completed the Certificate of Teaching with the ABRSM - I am very keen to receive quality input about my teaching, as well as continuing to have lessons to keep my own playing improving.

I do feel a passion for teaching and love doing my best to move my students on. So far I have a 100% pass rate for exams though I am happy if students don't wish to pursue that route.

Most of my adult life I have been involved in Buddhist practice - in fact, Ajay is my Buddhist name - and I like to think this contributes to my piano teaching. Buddhism emphasises ethics, awareness, taking responsibility for oneself, friendliness and compassion and though I make no claims to be a good practitioner, I think many of its values have seeped into me over the years. Don't worry, I am not the proselytising type!

I have lived in Mossley for about 5 years and love the hills as well the accessibility of Manchester, where I have lived since 1991 on and off.
